What is Ayurveda and How It Shapes My Yoga Practice

When people ask me why I started Live Your Life Gear, the honest answer begins with Ayurveda. As a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic Health Counselor, my approach to movement, wellness, and even the clothes I wear is deeply rooted in this ancient system of healing. Let me share what Ayurveda is and how it has shaped everything about the way I practice — and the products I create.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural medicine that originated in India. The word itself means "the science of life" (ayur = life, veda = science or knowledge). At its core, Ayurveda teaches that true health is a balance of mind, body, and spirit — and that each person has a unique constitution, or dosha, that influences everything from digestion to sleep to how we respond to stress.

The three doshas are Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Understanding your dominant dosha helps you make choices — in food, movement, rest, and environment — that bring you into balance rather than depletion.

How Ayurveda Shapes My Yoga Practice

In Ayurveda, yoga isn't one-size-fits-all. A Vata-dominant person benefits from grounding, slow, and warming practices like Yin or restorative yoga. A Pitta type thrives with cooling, moderate-intensity flows that release heat without adding more fire. A Kapha type benefits from energizing, invigorating practices that get the body moving and the mind alert.

For me, this means listening deeply to what my body needs each day rather than following a rigid routine. Some mornings call for a vigorous flow; others call for stillness and breath. Ayurveda gave me permission to honor that wisdom.

How It Shapes the Products I Create

This same philosophy of mindfulness and intentionality extends to the products I design. I wanted activewear that feels as good as it looks — soft against the skin, breathable, and made with the same respect for the natural world that Ayurveda teaches. That's why the Flow Collection is made with sustainable Tencel fabric, and why a percentage of every sale supports the Rainforest Trust. What we wear is an extension of our values.

Start Your Own Ayurvedic Journey

You don't need to overhaul your life to begin. Start by noticing — how do you feel after different types of movement? What foods leave you energized versus depleted? What time of day do you feel most alive? These small observations are the beginning of Ayurvedic wisdom.  If you would like to learn more about Ayurveda, you can book a FREE consultation call with Karla.  BOOK A CALL
